An increase of oil temperature affects its ability to properly lubricate and protect engines which can result in engine failure in extreme cases. Tomioka Racing oil cooler kit is constructed from high quality aluminum heat exchanger and its 16-rows core is capable of producing cooling effect for its compact size. Tomioka oil cooler kit is designed to be mounted behind the cramped space on the back of the front bumper beam of Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S and Toyota FT-86. The cooler core is connected through Aluminum AN10 ttings via stainless steel braided line to ensure the necessary free-owing oil supply to the boxer engine. In addition, TR oil cooler kit includes a temperature- controlled oil sandwich plate which protects the engine during cold climate with quick engine warm-up and kicks into operation when the engine oil is too warm. Thermostat opens at 180F to ensure proper warm up.

Oil Temp & Thermostat FAQ

Why did TR choose a 180°F thermostat?
The 180°F plate balances daily driving and performance. It keeps the cooler bypassed until ~180°F for normal warm-up, then opens (fully ~190–195°F) to control oil temps during load so the FA24 stays in the ideal ~200–230°F range.
Do I need a 200°F thermostat?
Usually no. A 200°F plate simply delays flow to the cooler, which can raise steady-state temps by ~10–15°F. It doesn’t increase peak cooling capacity.
Will 180°F run too cool in winter?
No. The thermostat keeps the cooler bypassed until warm. In very cold climates with short trips, minor airflow tweaks (e.g., slight grille blocking) are more effective than changing thermostat temp.
What oil temps should I expect?
  • Cruise / mixed driving: ~185–215°F
  • Spirited or hot weather: ~210–240°F (airflow & mounting matter)
  • Extended idling: temps may rise due to limited airflow across any air-to-oil cooler
Track use tips
Ensure clean, direct airflow to the core, avoid hose kinks, and recheck fittings after initial hard pulls. Monitor temps as usual.
