The KA24DE engine found in USDM Nissan 240SX vehicles are being turbocharged more often due to the ease of sourcing parts, its cost effectiveness, and the challenges and rewards it offers. Anyone who has turbo'd a naturally aspirated engine have come across ignition and air/fuel ratio issues or worse, blown their motors due to lack of proper engine management. Existing options include piggybacks that alter the stock OEM ecu signals, full standalone ECUs that require custom wiring and crank triggers, and expensive plug and play units that exposes over a billion tuning parameters, making it difficult to tune for the average person.
Many enthusiasts know about the Power FC, a cost effective, full standalone engine management solution. However, there is no application for the KA24DE engine due to lack of a market for that motor. In this article, I will give you ALL THE TECHNICAL AND ENGINEERING DETAILS YOU NEED TO BUILD YOUR OWN ADAPTER BOARD so that you can use a Power FC SR20DET ECU for the KA24DE engine. Having Power FC setup for the KA24DE will give you the following benefits:
- More cost effective standalone engine management solution
- Existing tools & knowledge exist for the SR20DET - use the same resources for the KA24DE engine
- Full access to tuning and engine parameters with FC Datalogit
- FC Datalogit enables full datalogging (engine sensors plus 4 single-ended / 2 differential external analog)
- Handheld unit displays up to 8 realtime engine parameters
- Real-time ignition & fuel map tuning
Before I begin on the hardware board, here is a little engineering background on why you can't simply use a Power FC (or any SR ECU) on the KA engine.
